Entertainment Weekly reports, “Summit Entertainment has tentatively slated Nov. 20, 2009, as the release date for New Moon, the Twilight sequel, which means any director who signs on to replace Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has to be in Vancouver by Dec. 15 to begin 12 weeks of preproduction before a mid-March start date. Reports have speculated that Hardwicke was fired for being difficult on set, but sources close to her suggest Summit’s aggressive production schedule turned her off. ‘She’d love to do the sequel if she could do it better than Twilight,’ says one. ‘It became clear that Summit didn’t have those same priorities.’

With or without Hardwicke, Summit faces other snags. Two sources tell EW the studio doesn’t want to rehire baby-faced Taylor Lautner (pictured) as Jacob, though Lautner’s agent has apparently reached out to the imaging company behind The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in an attempt to demonstrate to Summit how a digitally bulked-up Lautner could work. (Summit says it won’t make a decision until a new filmmaker is on board.) There’s also the matter of finding a cast of Native American actors to play Jacob’s werewolf clan — a difficult challenge Hardwicke was also faced with before settling on Lautner, who isn’t completely Native American. And with a slightly increased budget of $50 million — much of which is assumed will go to leads asking for heftier paydays, location shoots in Italy, and ramped-up F/X — Summit will have to scrimp somewhere.”

i dont like it when they change the actors, but i think for this particular situation, it wouldnt work with taylor. think about the physical changes jacob goes through in the book. he gets much much taller, older looking, more muscular. there is no way they could do it actually, no matter how much he worked out in a gym, and im afraid it would look really dumb if they used special fx to do it.

but then again, they might be able to pull it off. who knows. i wont complain either way, no matter what their situation is. im just ready to see new moon.

To say that Taylor may not return is opening up a whole new can of worms that I personally don’t think everyone is ready for. Taylor didn’t only play Jacob, but for many he IS Jacob, the image has already stuck. These images are imperative because the fans of Twilight have studied them, and have very high expectations. If no complaints have been placed about Taylor’s role as Jacob, then it seems pointless to replace him. Many twilight fans are now worried that Summit entertainment is changing the very core of Twilight in order to gain more prophet. In turn this will drive all of the most devoted fans to leave. Think about it this way, dumbledore was also a massive character in the harry potter series, noone noticed him being replaced. The only people who actually NEED to be the same are the vampires and Bella, because they are supposed to look the same, Bella said in new moon that she barely recognized jacob after his growth spurt so yeah, replace him for the after part of the phasing. but other than that noone is really gonna notice him gone.

I thought Taylor did a wonderful job as Jacob in Twilight. He was the perfect Jacob; actually.
But it does concern me that he will not be able to portray the Jacob in New Moon as well. I mean; sure he’ll be great as far as the acting goes. I’m more worried about him actually looking like Jacob should. And sure, they could use effects to make him look bigger; or whatever…but do we really want to trust Summit with effect? Really; look at the sparkling effect in Twilight.

I do think that Summit is rushing things a lot; because of the money. Hopefully; they’ll think this over, and realize that if they screw New Moon up…it wont do as well as Twilight has.

Taylor is an amazing actor; and this is no way to say that he wasn’t a good Jacob. But I do understand why Summit is thinking about changing him. if they can find a way around it; that would be great. But if they dont, i’m sure changing him wouldnt be too bad…people are over-reacting. I guess i just dont see jacob as a huge character. He isnt even there that long in New Moon…technically; it just seems like that because Edward is gone for so long..and because Stephenie describes a lot of stuff…so that makes it seem longer.
